🔦 How bout that storm

Plus, the Harvest Festival, Summer Sunset Blast, Silver Lake mosquitoes and more

Today is Aug. 25, 2023.

  • This is Ben filling in on the weather report for Tom, who lost power at 12:24 a.m. last night when that angry storm swept through. He was in the middle of finishing up the newsletter and then texted me live updates as the wind rocked his house for at least 30 minutes. He said his street is littered with debris and impassable from the big trees that crashed down. He said the trail of wreckage had the look of a tornado path. I couldn’t find any reports of a tornado or any rotation in Stow, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. “I’ve never experienced anything like that before,” he said. “I thought the house was coming apart.” His house seems to be OK, but the neighbors had some damage. We’ll follow up with whatever else we learn about the storm in next Friday’s edition.

  • As for today’s weather, it’ll be rainy in parts but also sunny with a high of 80. Humid is the word of the day. It’ll be sunny and pleasant over the rest of the week, with highs in the 70s or high 60s. All right, the rest of this is what Tom wrote earlier in the day. Over to you, Tom…

  • If you’re interested in holding office in Silver Lake, now’s your chance: There’s a council vacancy in District A for an unexpired term ending Dec. 31, 2025. Letters of interest and resumes will be accepted until noon Monday, Sept. 11. Go to this page for more information.

  • If you just subscribed or missed something in an earlier newsletter, don’t fret: Subscribers have access to every edition of The Spotlight at www.stowmunroefalls.com. Check out back issues to catch up on everything that’s going on in our communities — you never know what you might have missed!

After you’ve hit the Stow Summer Sunset Blast on Labor Day Weekend and the 16th Annual Paw Fest two weeks later, you can complete the September trifecta by checking out the Stow Historical Society’s Harvest Festival at the end of the month.

The annual event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30 and Sunday, Oct. 1 at Heritage Reserve Park (inside Silver Springs Park) at 5120 Young Rd. in Stow. Admission is free.

The festival offers a plethora of things to see and do:

  • Craft vendors, musical entertainment, a concession stand, old-time craft demonstrations, apple butter stirring, and interactive children’s activities.

  • Blacksmith, woodcarvers and weaver.

  • Visit three historic houses (Heritage House Museum, Mary Starr House and Minnie Darrow House), the one-room schoolhouse and the antique tool barn.

  • Children will be able to decorate a pumpkin to take home, sponsored by Stow Parks and Recreation.

  • Artisans and crafters will sell their wares both inside and outside the Heritage Barn.

  • A special feature this year is a Civil War reenactment and encampment.

The Stow Historical Society collects and maintains artifacts and documents pertaining to the history of Stow and presents programming and school tours for the local community. The Harvest Festival is the main fundraiser of the year. Visit the SHS Facebook page and website for more information.
