🔦 Dumbo Drop but trees
Keep your eyes on the skies next week. Plus, safe streets, class reunion, books and more

Today is March 24, 2023.
Well, spring is here -- and we'll have the rain to prove it the next couple days. It's going to be cooler with a morning shower today, with a high of 49 and low of 43. Then we're going to have showers and thunderstorms Saturday, warming up to a high of 64 and dropping to a low of 35. We could get showers again Tuesday, but other than that it should be dry most of next week. And judging by the number of flooded yards in our area the last couple days, we need all the dry days we can get.
Latest news in brief
Yes, that's a helicopter transporting trees that you'll see flying over Call Road next week
If you see a tree-toting helicopter flying back and forth Monday, March 27 and Tuesday, March 28 in the area of Fox Den Golf Course on Call Road in Stow, your mind isn't playing tricks on you. It's really a helicopter carrying trees. According to the City of Stow, a private company, Energy Transfer, has an easement on the Fox Den property that runs north to south through the course, and there are about 54 trees on the easement through the course that need to be cleared. Energy Transfer, using its tree-clearing subcontractor Midwest, will begin dropping the trees throughout the course today.
And this is where that helicopter comes in: On March 27 and 28, the company will transport the cut trees by helicopter to a staging area across Call Road, near the Fox Den driving range. The helicopter is being used for transport, instead of heavy trucks and equipment, to incur as little damage as possible to the golf course. The trees will then be chipped on-site and hauled away.
Fox Den Golf Course will be closed both days that the helicopter is operating (March 27-28). Motorists may be affected by intermittent road closures and minor delays as the helicopter transports trees across Call Road. This is expected to occur routinely throughout the day between 7:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. March 27 and 28, so it would be best to avoid the area if possible.
In the more than 17 years that the City of Stow has owned the course, this type of easement clearing has never been done. To remediate, Fox Den will plant more than 50 new trees in the area where the old trees will be removed.

Nearby Tallmadge (4 years), Twinsburg (3 years) and Hudson (2 years) were also among the nine Summit County cities that made the list.

State of the City: Pribonic says Stow is 'poised well for the future' after bouncing back from Covid in 2022
Stow is back to normal.
That was the clear takeaway from Mayor John Pribonic's message at his State of the City address March 21 at the Acker-Moore Memorial Post. In his presentation, Pribonic detailed the city's accomplishments in 2022 as it recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic and laid out his vision for 2023, including focusing on the needs of residents, keeping Stow at the forefront of economic and business development, building strong partnerships with local businesses and supporting departments that keep the city's neighborhoods safe, with a primary goal of enhancing residents' quality of life.
"2022 was a pivotal year," Pribonic said. "We moved away from virtual and back to in-person. Our celebrations returned to normal. ... We are poised well for the future."
Among the highlights, according to the mayor:
The city welcomed 18 new commercial and retail businesses in 2022, while residential development continued to grow with two subdivision additions and expansions.
Income tax collections increased more than 10% in 2022 as the city ended the year with adequate balances in all of its major funds.
A Parks and Recreation Master Plan project that will provide a guide for the Stow Parks and Rec system for the next 10 years.
Began development of a long-term Capital Budget financing plan for the city for the period 2023-2027. When completed, the plan will enable the city to more efficiently schedule and undertake needed capital improvements each year.
