Learn what's growing in your backyard. Plus, storm fallout, Bulldog Bags and more

Today is Sept. 7, 2023.
Good morning! It’s going to be mainly cloudy and not as warm today, but it will still be humid with a thunderstorm in spots. Expect a high of 78 degrees and a low of 65. We could also get a thunderstorm Friday. And a sure sign that fall is just around the corner: lows will drop to around 50 degrees late next week.
Welcome to our new publishing day! Beginning with today’s edition, The Spotlight will land in your inbox on Thursday mornings rather than Friday. This gives readers an extra day of lead time heading into weekend events and won’t affect coverage or the Community Calendar. It’s a win-win.
The City of Munroe Falls is accepting applications for a full-time office clerk. The office clerk performs receptionist and clerical support services primarily for the administration and director of finance. Application deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15. Go to this page for an application or more information.
If you just subscribed or missed something in an earlier newsletter, don’t fret: Subscribers have access to every edition of The Spotlight at www.stowmunroefalls.com. Check out back issues to catch up on everything that’s going on in our communities — you never know what you might have missed!

“The Storm of ‘23” aftermath: Two weeks later, recovery continues across the area

There’s still some work to do.
That’s the point Stow Mayor John Pribonic is stressing to the community in his September 2023 newsletter detailing the city’s ongoing recovery efforts from the storm that ravaged the area the night of Aug. 24-25. The storm cut power to hundreds of thousands of residents across Northeast Ohio and spawned at least 12 confirmed tornadoes.
Here’s the latest from the City of Stow:
Storm-related yard debris pick-up is offered to all residents and is currently underway. In a Facebook post Sept. 1, Pribonic said city crews will be out picking up brush for at least the next two weeks and are going to hit every street once (limb and tree debris must be placed on tree lawns).
The City Center Complex had quite a bit of tree damage, which crews have mostly cleared.
The Sancturetum was still closed as of Pribonic’s newsletter due to downed power lines and trees.
The wooded trails at Silver Springs Park “will need some serious attention,” Pribonic said.
As for any immediate dangers or power issues, Pribonic said that all live power lines had been cleared from the roads by late morning Saturday, Aug. 26, and major repairs had been completed on substations by Sunday, Aug. 27, although he did say “a huge number of electric poles need replaced” throughout the city.
“We continue to assess all city-owned areas,” Pribonic said.

Bulldog Bags, Inc. hosting community movie night to thank volunteers for their efforts fighting food insecurity in SMF schools

The 2023-24 school year is well underway, which means tests, homework, projects and all the other responsibilities that come with being a student. But it also means something else:
Food insecurity within the school district — and that’s where Bulldog Bags, Inc. comes in. Bulldog Bags, Inc. is a non-profit organization in Stow that helps in fighting food insecurity within the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District.
Once a month, their Bulldog Box program offers a box of fresh, frozen and non-perishable foods focused on stocking the pantries with snacks and meal preparation of those who qualify.
The Bulldog Bag program packs bags twice a month during the school year for kids to take home with them on the weekend.
Both programs are run entirely by volunteers.
All donations of both time and money are used strictly to get the supplies to the people who need them.
To show their appreciation for everyone’s efforts, Bulldog Bags, Inc. is hosting a free community movie night Saturday, Sept. 16 on the Green at Stow City Hall, located at 3760 Darrow Rd. The event starts at 6:45 p.m., with the movie “Ron’s Gone Wrong” beginning at dusk around 8 p.m. The all-ages event will feature food trucks, crafts, volleyball and more, and everyone is invited.
“What we do wouldn’t be possible without the support from the community and the businesses within our community,” Laura Root, co-founder of Bulldog Bags, Inc., said. “That is why we wanted to put on this event, to thank everyone who makes what we do possible.”
