Election Preview: Part 1
City charter amendments facing Stow voters in November General Election
Three proposed City of Stow charter amendments are on the November ballot for Stow voters. They are Issue 28, Issue 29 and Issue 30, and Stow City Council Member Sindi Harrison detailed each in her recent letter mailed to residents in the city’s Ward 2, which she represents.
The three issues are:
ISSUE 28: Would require the streaming of meetings of council, committees, boards and commissions of the city. “The intent of this amendment is to give our residents access to these meetings in their entirety in a timely manner if they are unable to attend in person,” Harrison explained in her letter. “Currently meetings may be attended in person, with only written minutes provided, which may take several weeks to complete. The streaming of the meetings will allow for the full meeting to be accessible almost immediately to all residents.”
ISSUE 29: For the mayor to provide the State of the City address at a city council meeting so it is on the official city record. “The last several years the mayor’s State of the City address was given at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon which residents must pay to attend,” Harrison said. “This change would give the residents of Stow access to this presentation for free and it would also be available for viewing at their convenience.”
ISSUE 30: For the clerk of council’s office to be in City Hall and near Council Chambers. “This allows the Council Clerk and Office to be readily accessible to the residents and aligns the requirements of the office location to be in City Hall the same as is already written in the Charter for all other elected official offices of the City,” Harrison said.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7; polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. Registration deadline for the 2023 November General Election is Tuesday, Oct. 10; go to this page for registration information in Summit County. Early in-person and absentee voting begins Wednesday, Oct. 11.
