Here's an update to the construction happening at two Stow parks

Today is Oct. 3, 2024.
Good morning! We’re in for a nice one today: partly sunny with areas of morning fog, then warmer in the afternoon. Our high will be 75 and the low will be 50. Temps will remain in the mid- to high-70s throughout the weekend, before the bottom falls out starting Monday when daytime highs only reach the high 50s. Lows early next week are forecast to dip into the low 40s. Hello, October!
HELP THE FURRY VICTIMS OF HURRICANE HELENE: Double Dog Day Care, located at 3770 Fishcreek Rd. in Stow, is collecting donations of pet food/items for the Florida hurricane victims. Bring your donations to Double Dog between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Double Dog will be collecting the donations until Friday, Oct. 11.
SMF LIBRARY TRUSTEE POSITION OPEN: The Stow-Munroe Falls Board of Education is now accepting applications for a Jan. 1, 2025 appointment to the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library Board of Trustees. Send a letter of interest and resume to: Jenn Hale, Fiscal Officer; Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library; 3512 Darrow Rd.; Stow, OH 44224. To be considered for this appointment, all resumes must be received on or before Friday, Oct. 25.
STOW LEAF PICKUP: The City of Stow’s Residential Leaf Pickup Program begins Monday, Oct. 28. Residents of Stow should have their leaves placed no more than 5 feet off the edge of the pavement and in rows for easy pickup with the leaf collection tubes. Have all leaves out by 7 a.m. the Monday of your scheduled week. For a full list of scheduled pick-up dates, districts and guidelines, go to this page.
SILVER LAKE LEAF PICKUP: The Village of Silver Lake’s Leaf and Limb Collection Program starts Monday, Oct. 28 and runs through Sunday, Dec. 1. In the meantime, the village is asking residents to keep leaves away from the street where they can create a hazard for walkers, bicyclists and vehicles as well as clog storm drains.
GET THOSE HALLOWEEN COSTUMES READY: Here are the Trick-or-Treat times and dates in our area — Stow: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26; Munroe Falls: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26; Silver Lake: 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.
STOW WINTER SNOWPLOW ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: Applications for the City of Stow’s Winter Snowplow Assistance Program for the 2024-25 winter season will be available starting Monday, Oct. 7. The program is designed to provide driveway and sidewalk snow removal services to residents who are either elderly or disabled and are experiencing true hardship circumstances. The program will run from Nov. 15 to March 31, 2025. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Go here for more information.
EYES ON THE SKIES: The Draconids meteor shower will be visible from Sunday, Oct. 6 to Thursday, Oct. 10, with the peak coming on the evening of Oct. 7 and into the morning of Oct. 8. The waxing crescent moon will set that night before 9 p.m., allowing for a moonless sky in which to view nature’s light show. Go here to learn more about the Draconids.
VOTING SCHEDULE FOR THE 2024 NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION: Military & Overseas Absentee Voting: Began Sept. 20; Deadline to Register to Vote: Oct. 7 (boards open until 9 p.m.); Early In-Person Voting: Begins Oct. 8 (includes the two Saturdays and the two Sundays before Election Day); Absentee Voting By Mail: Begins Oct. 8; Election Day: Tuesday, Nov. 5 (polls open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.). If not returned by mail, absentee ballots must be received by your board of elections by 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5. For more information, go to this page.
WHERE DO YOU STAND ON THE SMF SCHOOLS BOND ISSUE? The Spotlight is taking the pulse of the Stow-Munroe Falls community on the upcoming $238 million, 35-year bond issue the school district is putting on the November ballot to build five new schools. If passed, the 8.89-mill bond issue would increase property taxes for owners of homes valued at $200,000 by nearly $622 annually. Send us your comments on the issue, and we will publish them as we get them in our “Reader Spotlight” feature (detailed below).

Sneak peak: Here’s what the Stow-Munroe Falls Schools’ bond issue language looks like on the ballot
ISSUE #34, STOW-MUNROE FALLS CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT - PROPOSED BOND ISSUE
Shall bonds be issued by the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District, Summit and Portage Counties, Ohio for the purpose of constructing, improving, furnishing, and equipping four new PK-5 elementary schools and one new 6-8 middle school, with related site improvements and appurtenances thereto; improving, renovating, furnishing, and equipping existing facilities; constructing, furnishing, and equipping new facilities for school district purposes; and demolition of existing facilities in the principal amount of $238,005,493, to be repaid annually over a maximum period of 35 years, and an annual levy of property taxes be made outside of the ten-mill limitation, estimated by the county fiscal officer to average over the repayment period of the bond issue 8.89 mills for each $1 of taxable value, which amounts to $311 for each $100,000 of the county fiscal officer’s appraised value, commencing in 2024, first due in calendar year 2025, to pay the annual debt charges on the bonds, and to pay debt charges on any notes issued in anticipation of those bonds?
