Stow-Munroe Falls has a new school board member and a new president

Today is Jan. 16, 2025.

  • Morning, all! Well, itā€™s been so long since weā€™ve had a real winter, weā€™ve forgotten what itā€™s like. But Mother Nature is serving us a wake-up call this year with an extended period of frigid temperatures and snow piled on the ground. And so it continues: Weā€™re under a Winter Weather Advisory from 4 a.m. today to 4 a.m. Friday, with total snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches expected. Weā€™ll have a high of 29 degrees and a low of 26 today, but thatā€™s balmy compared to whatā€™s coming early next week when temperatures as low as minus-9 degrees are forecast. Old Man Winter is back with a vengeance.

Send a card to the troops: Sixth annual Operation Valentineā€™s Day is underway

For the sixth straight year, Stow City Council Member Jeremy McIntire is launching ā€œOperation Valentineā€™s Dayā€ to collect Valentines for members of the United States armed forces who are deployed overseas. McIntire is an Iraq War veteran and Purple Heart recipient.

In the previous five years, Operation Valentineā€™s Day has received more than 50,000 Valentines from across the United States.

If you want to create a Valentines for the troops, here are the guidelines:

  • Send a handwritten letter, note or handmade card. Envelopes are not required.

  • Cards should be no larger than the standard 8 1/2 by 11 inches for ease in shipping and distribution.

  • Cards canā€™t include candy, food or glitter.

  • Keep messages to soldiers positive, tell them ā€œthank youā€ and wish them a Happy Valentineā€™s Day. You are also encouraged to tell the soldier about yourself. All cards will be screened.

  • Include your church, school or organizationā€™s name, street address and/or email contact on each card so recipients can write back. Cards from children and students must include a first name only.

  • Photos of the sender, senderā€™s family, church or classroom participants can be included and will add a personal touch to your card.

  • Donā€™t put individual Valentines in sealed envelopes.

Once youā€™ve made your Valentineā€™s card:

  • Take it to the drop box at Stow City Hall, located at 3760 Darrow Rd. City Hall is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Valentines can be dropped off until Friday, Jan. 31.

  • Schools, churches, businesses and retirement homes in Stow can have their cards picked up at their location by contacting McIntire at 330-352-0487 or [email protected]; or Claire McIntire at 330-618-7586 or [email protected].
