Plus, a movie in the park, construction updates and more local news

Today is Aug. 11, 2023.

  • Well, this is it: Today is the last of the official Dog Days of Summer. And in true dogs days fashion, it’s going to be partly sunny and humid with a high of 83 degrees and a low of 66. After today, though, get ready for some wild weather (like we haven’t had enough of that this year): Expect gusty thunderstorms Saturday with the potential for flash flooding and damaging winds, with more heavy thunderstorms forecast for Monday. The dog days might be over, but summer still has a ways to go.

  • Stow Mayor John Pribonic reported on his Facebook page that the artwork on one of the traffic signal boxes in the city was recently defaced. Kudos to the members of the City of Stow Service Department who managed to clean off the defacement and have the artwork looking beautiful again. Pribonic posted Aug. 10 that “if you see something, say something,” and if you do see something to please contact the Stow Police Department on its non-emergency line at (330) 689-5700.

Back in business: Coffee, pizza openings help offset the city’s recent losses

It’s been a rough few weeks for the Stow business community lately with the pandemic-related closures of Tuesday Morning and Fawn & Fanny.

But now there’s good news to report: After losing those two businesses, the city is gaining two with the recent opening of the new Double Shot Coffee Drive Thru and the imminent opening of Twisted Tomato Pizzeria.

  • Double Shot Coffee Drive Thru, located at 1580 Norton Rd. in the Stow-Hudson Towne Centre plaza, held its ribbon cutting Aug. 7 and officially opened Aug. 8. Double Shot’s hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

  • Meanwhile, Twisted Tomato Pizzeria will hold its grand opening from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14. Twisted Tomato is located in the former Pony Express Pizza space at 3031 Graham Rd. in the Crossroads at Fishcreek Shopping Center.

Announcing lower pricing for The Spotlight!

If you’re a paid subscriber, you’ll be able to keep reading the rest of this email. You’ll see the community calendar, obituaries and news about the major construction projects going on in Stow, theme nights at Bulldogs football games, another “seismic-like event” in the area, and more local news.

But if you’re most people, you’ll need to upgrade your subscription to get access. We’ve made it even easier to do this.

Subscriptions are now only $2.99/month or $29.99/year. We think this is a great price for the amount of local news you’re getting with each issue. And it’s a significant reduction from the previous price of $10/month or $110/year.

Local news is a kind of glue for communities. It helps local businesses get their products and services to market, and it gives you a platform to hold your elected officials accountable. This leads to lower taxes and a higher quality of life. Research has shown what befalls communities without a local news source. We’re publishing The Spotlight because we want our community to thrive.

Oh, by the way, if you already have a paid subscription, you’ll be switched to the new lower pricing automatically. Thank you for your support!
