The city's planning commission tees up new businesses and rezoning

  • Good morning! It’s been a beautiful start to fall with warm, sunny days and crisp nights. And it’s been dry — too dry, actually. That persistent dry weather will worsen drought conditions through the weekend, starting today when we’ll have sun and areas of high clouds with a high of 75 degrees and a low of 53. No rain is in the forecast until next Tuesday — and not a moment too soon.

  • STOW NURSE SAVES DOG: Here’s a heartwarming story to start your day: Stow City Council recently honored resident Kem Cook for saving the life of Winston, her neighbor’s mixed-breed rescue dog who nearly choked to death on a fried chicken drumstick that he found on the side of the road. Cook, a registered nurse with over 35 years of hospital and emergency room experience, used her lifesaving skills to pull the bone from Winston’s throat and perform CPR. Breathing again, Winston was rushed to a veterinary hospital and has since made a full recovery. Read the full story here.

Silver Lake

Scam alert: Silver Lake PD sees rise in bogus phone calls trying to separate you from your money

In a Sept. 27 Facebook post, the Silver Lake Police Department reported that it “has seen a recent uptick in scams and attempted scams.” Here’s what’s going on according to Silver Lake PD:

  • Residents are being asked via phone call to take out large amounts of cash and meet with a person(s) and turn it over.

  • The potential victim is being told that they owe money to a website, or they missed a payment on an account.

  • Silver Lake PD has also seen where the potential victim is being told they have a warrant and the only way to take care of it is to provide cash or sometimes gift cards. “Under no circumstances will a government agency ever request meeting in this way,” the police department posted.

Silver Lake PD says to look for these red flags as signs of a scam phone call:

  • The caller asks for an unusual form of payment (Bitcoin, gift cards, wire transfer).

  • The caller creates a sense of urgency or high-pressure threats (arrest, warrants).

  • Requests for personal or financial information.

  • Claims to be from law enforcement or another government agency.

The Silver Lake Police Department says that if you suspect a scam call, hang up immediately and independently verify the phone number of the person or agency.
