Ready to have a Blast on Labor Day weekend?

If you live in Stow, you know what that means: the annual Summer Sunset Blast, which takes place Saturday, Sept. 3, and Sunday, Sept. 4, at Silver Springs Park. The event runs from 5 to 10 p.m. each day, and admission is free.

  • In addition to live music, the Blast will have everything from ax throwing to a petting zoo to a Swenson's food truck — and even a mechanical bull. ā€œThere is something for everyone,ā€ said Mayor John Pribonic.

  • The fireworks show at the end of the festivities Sept. 4 is worth the trip to the Blast all by itself.

Business

Loss of beloved Long’s Shoes hits customers hard

Three generations of Long's owners: John Long; his son, John; and Andy Logsdon.

When Long’s Shoes closed its doors for the final time Aug. 20, Stow lost more than just a business: It lost a community icon from a bygone era. Loyal customers loved the store’s personal touch and old-school feel that made it a lovable dinosaur in an age of faceless mega-chains.

  • Long’s operated for 53 years, first at Stow-Kent Plaza and then on Route 59 in Stow.

  • It was known for carrying specialty brands, functional footwear like orthopedic shoes, and tailoring to specific needs.

  • ā€œI’m really crushed that they’ve closed,ā€ said Silver Lake customer Sue Poling, whose special-needs son, William, relied on Long’s for his shoes.

Law enforcement

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a cop? Here’s your chance

Except when we’re trying to talk our way out of a speeding ticket, most of us don’t get much of an up-close-and-personal look at the police. But you can if you sign up for the 2022 Citizens Police Academy, which is free and will be offered this fall under the sponsorship of Western Reserve Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls.

  • The Stow, Munroe Falls and Silver Lake police are among the participating departments.

  • Course topics include canine, DUI enforcement, use of force, narcotics trends and other police-related issues.

  • Classes start Sept. 21 and will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 9. To sign up, call the Munroe Falls police at 330-688-7494, the Stow police at 330-689-3299, or the Silver Lake police at 330-928-7573. Class size is limited.
